Supplements, Supplements, Supplements! Are they for me?

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

Remember, your workout is just one piece of the puzzle! Our bodies need to be properly nourished to not only perform at our best when we're at Day1, but also to ensure we recover optimally to continue our progress to levels beyond what we ever thought achievable!

At Day1, we want to provide all our members with everything we can to ensure they're the best version of themselves! So you'll now notice you're able to order a protein shake, a pre workout or even some BCAA's to have before, during or after your workout, we'll even lend you a shaker!

The question with supplements we often get is: a) What does it do; and b) should I be taking it!

Well we've put together a bit of an info sheet to hopefully answer a few of those questions!

WPI Protein Powder: The Building Blocks of Muscle

WPI, or Whey Protein Isolate, is a high-quality, concentrated protein source! WPI protein is a very lean protein, void of carbohydrates and unwanted additives. It's known for its excellent amino acid profile, especially rich in essential amino acids and BCAAs. These amino acids are the building blocks of muscle tissue and play a pivotal role in muscle repair, growth, and recovery.

Incorporating WPI protein powder into your routine can be beneficial in several ways:

  1. Muscle Repair and Growth: Consuming WPI protein after your workout provides your muscles with the necessary amino acids to repair and grow, helping you achieve your fitness goals more effectively.

  2. Convenience: WPI protein powder is convenient and quick to prepare, making it an ideal option for post-workout nutrition, especially when you're on the go.

When to take it? Protein supplementation can be utilised straight after a workout, a metabolism booster first thing in the morning; or as recovery builder with dinner/before bed.

BCAAs: Boosting Performance and Reducing Muscle Breakdown

BCAAs, or Branched-Chain Amino Acids, are a subset of essential amino acids that include leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These amino acids are unique because they are metabolized directly in the muscles, making them readily available for energy during workouts and aiding in muscle recovery afterward. In simple terms, they aid in the absorption and transportation of protein to the muscle!

The benefits of BCAAs include:

  1. Energy Source: BCAAs can provide energy during intense workouts, helping to delay fatigue and improve endurance.

  2. Reduced Muscle Breakdown: BCAAs can reduce muscle protein breakdown, which is especially important during periods of calorie restriction or intense training.

  3. Recovery: Supplementing with BCAAs can aid in post-workout recovery, as they promote muscle protein synthesis and reduce muscle soreness.

When to take it? BCAA's are great to take during a workout, they are simply mixed with water so can be quite diluted to minimse the flavour, or quite the opposite if you enjoy that 'gatorade' like taste to sip on!

Pre-Workout Supplements: Energize and Focus

Pre-workout supplements are designed to enhance energy, focus, and overall workout performance. They often contain a blend of ingredients like caffeine, beta-alanine, creatine, and nitric oxide precursors which provide the body with a neural response often resulting in that 'buzzing' sensation. When taken correctly, pre-workout supplements can help you get the most out of your training sessions. The body will establish a plateau if taken too regularly, so aim for this supplement if you feel you need that extra kick through your workout!

Here's why pre-workout supplements can be beneficial:

  1. Increased Energy: Ingredients like caffeine can provide a quick energy boost, helping you power through your workout with increased intensity.

  2. Enhanced Focus: Many pre-workout supplements contain ingredients that improve mental clarity and focus, allowing you to concentrate on your exercises.

  3. Nitric Oxide Boost: Nitric oxide precursors can enhance blood flow to muscles, potentially improving nutrient delivery and muscle pump during workouts.

When to take it? Ideally, 10-20 minutes before you workout!

So to answer those questions, supplements ARE for everyone and can be a great tool to ensure you're getting the most out of your workouts from a preparation stand point as well as a recovery aid!
